Lindsey was given the task to pick a place for a day trip out of Strasbourg. She spent a little time on the internet and chose Nancy, France. We left early this morning and spent the day there. There is a lot of interesting history connected to this city. Place Stanislas (photo to left), was created as a way to link the medieval old town of Nancy and the new town built under Charles III in the 17th century. The square would also be a place royale to honor his son-in-law, Louis XV. More recently, it is noted that Nancy was freed from Nazi Germany by the U.S Army in 1944.
We toured most of the city central by foot and stopped for a bite to eat at a small cafe. I just love little French sidewalk cafes. They are the perfect place to watch people. I had the "Plate du jour". That would be the blue plate special in my world. I asked the waiter what it was and all I could understand (he only spoke French) was noodles and mushrooms. Weellll, I got a very fishy piece of Tuna and spaghetti with mushrooms on top. What an odd combination. I knew better than to complain, or send it back. I just ate my noodles and smiled with a "Merci".
To give our feet a rest, we decided we would take the first tram that came along and ride it around the city to get the full view. Good decision. We got off the train back near the center of the town and discovered a beautiful park with flowers and tree lined walking trails. There was a tree there that had branches hanging down so low and thick that it created a "tent" like place for the teenagers to hang out under. Lindsey commented on how it would be nice to have one of those back in Dallas.
Lindsey wasn't herself today. We had a nice dinner last night and she chose a dessert that was basically a pizza like creation with sliced apples, cinnamon, sugar and alcohol (brandy?). I know it sounds funny but it was almost like she had a hangover today! What a lightweight...but then she is only 15yrs old (16 in September). When we got back to the apartment this evening, she took a couple of Tylenol and had a little nap. She says she won't be having that dessert again. Funny girl.
It was my turn to cook tonight. I made pasta with a tasty sauce and garlic bread from a fresh baguette. Having the apartment has really been a pleasure. You can't do this in a hotel and it gives the feeling of home to lessen the homesickness one can get when away.
Tomorrow is our last day in Strasbourg before we head to Paris for a few days.
Later!
