Leaving a lovely city like Strasbourg is like leaving a good friend. I will miss it a lot but I take with me many good memories, and what is life without good memories?
I'll miss walking down the little winding streets that introduce courtyards full of people having a good time enjoying the company of friends with food, wine and laughter. I will miss chatting with the local shopkeeper where I get my daily baguette of bread. I'll miss the bicycle riders ringing their little bells at me to move out of the way. I'll even miss the locals looking at me like I'm crazy when I ask for directions.
We spent our morning just walking with no purpose or predetermined destination. It was enjoyable to just duck down little streets and explore all we could of the city. The smell of freshly baked croissants filled the air. Each café was busy preparing for the noon meal. The staff were setting out the sidewalk tables and chairs to accommodate the lunchtime crowd that would soon arrive.
We made our way over to the Cathedral to say our goodbyes. Walking through it again was like seeing it for the first time. The emotions of such a grand building is very moving and humbling.
Once the final postcard was written and dropped into the box, it was time to get lunch and enjoy another good meal of French/German cuisine. Lindsey and I couldn't agree on which restaurant we wanted to eat at so in the end we went to mine. I think it something to do with who was paying the bill. :-)
On our stroll back through the city Lindsey stopped for an ice cream and this time kept it balanced on top of the cone. I tried to get her to get on a carousel, but she refused. She knew I would snap a picture or take a video that could be used as a threat later. Smart girl. So instead of riding, we just sat on the bench and watch the young mommies put their little ones on to enjoy the ride that Lindsey enjoyed at that age.
There was a light rain shower that kept us tucked away in a little shop for a while. Of course we didn't dare come out empty handed. Lindsey purchased a little doll for Zoe (niece). We love the rain and it added to our wonderful memories. The sky was dark, the thunder and the small raindrops spitting on us for over an hour. The cafes scooped up their tables and chairs until the rain stopped and once again provide a dry place to dine. By the looks of it, they have done this many times. It was like a well rehearsed dance and I got to watch the performance.
Well, this is au revoir Strasbourg but I am surely saying that I will return.
